Waipu in a Spin

Oxfam’s Angelic Soles and local firefighters will be in a spin this weekend with the Waipu community on their side.

A spin-a-thon is being held to raise money and awareness for the two teams fundraising and competing for causes. For 12 hours more than 50 people will keep spin bike pedals turning at Waipu Scout Den. Funds raised will be split between an Oxfam Trailwalker Team and Waipu Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge participants. Event organiser and S.M.A.R.T. personal training and fitness owner Sharon Carroll says the spin-a-thon is a fun and active way to raise money and awareness for both teams.

Members of the Oxfam Trailwalker Team – the Angelic Soles – are Jonny Newbre, Vicki Morkel, Sharon Hailstone and Donna Fearon. The Trailwalker is an annual Oxfam fundraising event. Teams of four walk will 100km non-stop.

Waipu firefighters Phil Connel and Fiona Campbell are taking part in the The Sky Tower Challenge on May 1, which will raise funds for the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation.

In the event they race up 52 flights – or 1103 Sky Tower steps – in full firefighting gear weighing up to 25kg. Last year the Waipu team raised about $5000.

The spin-a-thon is at the Scout Den, Braemar Lane, Waipu, on Satur day, starting at 7.30am. For information phone 4320333 or 0272653227.
